They cause colony dispersal — cockroaches retreat deeper into walls and appliance interiors, making the distribution of infestation harder to map and the colony harder to reach. Health Risks
- Pathogen Spread: Cockroaches harbour and mechanically transfer bacteria — including Salmonella, E. coli, and Staphylococcus — across food preparation surfaces, utensils, and stored food. A single foraging cockroach can contaminate surfaces it crosses.
- Allergens: Cockroach droppings, cast skins, and dried saliva particles are established respiratory allergens. In enclosed living spaces, accumulation of these particles is associated with increased asthma frequency and severity — particularly in children and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
